Yet Another Rabbit Confiscation!

Here is the sad news that there has been yet another rabbit consfication from a breeder, similar to the Watseka, IL case that captured headlines earlier this year. [These photos are from the earlier Watseka rescue.]

This time the 100 rabbits are in Louisville, KY. We'll bring you updates from the Metro Animal Shelter in Louisville.

Don't Miss this Saturday at FEED!

Saturday, August 25th, is THE day to go to FEED restaurant, 2803 W. Chicago Ave., Chicago. FEED will donate 20% of every meal sold to help feed the homeless animals at Red Door. That includes brunch, lunch, dinner, and carryout! We're always looking for a good excuse to eat some of FEED's down-home, southern-style cooking -- and this is it!

FEED is BYOB, with an outdoor patio. See you there!

Safe at Last: Rufus the Red Beagle

Poor Rufus--when he turned up at another shelter, he was a mess. There were bites from bigger dogs all over his hip and leg. The other shelter loved him, but they didn't have room, so Rufus's fate was uncertain. On Sunday, Rufus arrived at his Red Door foster home and, as you can see, he looks very happy.

Thanks to Mary Ann Hetreed for helping with Rufus's transportation.

Space to Roam

You might have read about Anka last February on the blog;she was rescued from living in a barn. Certainly, if you've visited Red Door in the past five months, you've noticed Anka. She was the big rabbit--all 12+ pounds--who was living in a pen in the office area. Even if we'd wanted to put her in a cage [which we didn't], she would never have fit.

We knew it would take a special person to fall in love with a big girl like Anka, someone who could appreciate the size and personality of a Flemish Giant--plus someone who had enough space for Anka to live a free-roaming life. We're happy to say that our wishes for Anka have been fulfilled. She was adopted last Saturday.

Above are photos of Anka in her new home. Finally, she says, a place big enough for my ears!

Life's a Beach!

At least, for the animals who come to Spa Di Da Day. Fujoe and Patina had fun getting their summer glamour portrait taken. It was a great turnout--thanks to everyone who showed up, particularly all the Red Door alums.

Coco Loco!!

Little Coco came to Red Door dirty, covered in fleas, and with no appetite. Look at him now! Coco has been cleaned up, and pigs out like...well, like a pig! Coco is looking for a home where he can practice his kitty gymnastic skills.

Don't Miss the Summer Spa-Di-Da Day July 21st

What? Miss Spa-Di-Da Day?? Winston wouldn't hear of it! Your rabbits, guinea pigs and cats won't want to be left out of the summer spiff-up on July 21st, either. You don't need a reservation--just come between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Treats for humans and glamour photography for pets. 2410 W. Lunt, Chicago.

NOTE: If the temperature is over 90 degrees, please check with Red Door to be sure Spa Day is still being held. Since rabbits don't deal well with high temps, we need to keep an eye on the forecast.

What I Did On My Summer Vacation

Hi Everyone--

As you can see, when Red Door asked people to give a shelter animal a summer vacation, I really lucked out! Linda & Catherine Spitz are the best -- they give me rides in a stroller, and let me check out the produce daily (OK, I don't really eat all those apples!). I have some toys, a cardboard castle, and a lot of love and attention. I'm king of the world!
Raphael
P.S.: Other animals at Red Door would like a summer vacation, too. Interested? Just send an email to info@reddoorshelter.org to learn how you give a shelter animal a break.

3rd Watseka Rabbit is Adopted

We knew Ava, with her velvety fur and beautiful blue eyes, wouldn't last long at Red Door. And we were right. Ava will be going to her new home this week. A former Watseka rescue rabbit, Ava is a little doll--and the last of the Watseka rescues at the shelter.

Bailey's Back -- Looking for a Home

Bailey, the friendly beagle, is back at Red Door--through no fault of his own. This sweet guy would love a home. He is friendly, house-trained, good with kids. He can get along with other dogs, but probably would be happiest being either the only dog or the first dog of the household. Please let your friends know that Bailey is looking for a special someone.

In Memory of Mama Sue

Mama Sue was a long-time resident of Red Door. She died tonight at Animal 911 of complications from cancer. We will miss her sweet face.

No Wonder Donnie Looks Happy

He just got adopted! We're thrilled we could help Donnie--he came to Red Door after he was scheduled for euthansia at a traditional shelter. Donnie wasn't with us long--his winning personality won him a new home.

2nd Watseka Rabbit Goes Home!

Sienna didn't have to cool her heels at Red Door for long. Soon after being transferred in from South Suburban Humane Shelter, this rabbit--formerly one of the Watseka rescues--was adopted into a loving home. We love a hoppy ending.

Not Your Average Bunny Slipper

Say hello to Ziggy, the newest rabbit to arrive at Red Door. Ziggy is an Angora rabbit (often mistaken for bunny slippers!). He is very sweet and loves to be brushed--which is a good thing.

Agile Dogs--or not--at Walk

Dogs had fun showing off their agility skills - or just doggone goofing around - at Red Door's walk on June 3rd. Thanks to DOG Obedience Group (www.dogobediencegroup.com) and Wendy DeCarlo-Young for loaning us the equipment. DOG Obedience Group was a sponsor of Red Door's Gimme Shelter! Walk.

A Very Cool Time Was Had By All

The humidity might have been high last Sunday, for Red Door's 7th Annual Gimme Shelter! Walk for the Animals, but a very cool time was had by all. The rain held off so Danielle DeCamp from Bally's could warm up the 200 walkers & over 100 dogs. After the walk through historic Indian Boundary Park and the West Ridge neighborhood, it was time to Bob for Bones in the dog swimming pool. Humans enjoyed a great breakfast spread and chair massages; dogs loved their treat bags from The Hungry Pup. There was a tarot card reader, an animal communicator, and a healing aura therapy person. And Zeus & Company passed out dog treats.

Thanks for making this Gimme Shelter! the biggest, most successful one ever.

Why Did the Chicken Wander Around the Woods?

Maybe so it could get saved? Thanks to Annette and Chris, who found the chicken in a forest preserve. They contacted Red Door, who gave them some advice on catching it and hooked them up with Paulette, our chicken-duck expert [she also took the baby ducks after Easter]. Last we heard, the chicken had introduced herself to the other hens at Paulette's and was settling into her new home.

Watseka Rabbits Arrive--Sienna Kicks Back

Sienna, one of the original Watseka rabbits, arrived at Red Door Wednesday night. She immediately started to cool her heels in one of our iso rooms, as she recovers from her spay. Another Watseka bunny--Ava, a white mini-rex with blue eyes--arrived, too.

Bark in the Park Fun

Red Door had fun at Anti-Cruelty's Bark in the Park event, Saturday, May 5. So did Dr. Gene Mueller of ACS--shown here collecting a kiss from Red Door's board member Toni Greetis (with Tookie caught between them!). Joanne Burns, board member, had to settle for a kiss from Jake. Remember, there will be this much fun--and more!--at the Gimme Shelter walk on June 3. Don't miss it! Bailey Goes Home!

No wonder Bailey appears to be high-stepping here. He went to his new home today.

Thanks to Sheri Berliner and Petraits for the great photos, which helped Bailey find a new family, and thanks to Central Bark, who helped him out when he needed it.

A Room With A View -- Angelina Moves to a Foster Home

If you've been to Red Door in the past several years, you might have seen Angelina--that is, if you went into the small staff room in the back. Angelina lived there because she was terrified of the other cats at the shelter. She was dumped at Red Door, the victim of abuse, and then--while living in the main cat room--another cat attacked her. She sustained severe eye injuries which, over time, healed. Since then, she has lived in the staff room, which isn't much bigger than a large closet. But she felt safe there and there was room for one or two people to visit her. --- Now we're happy to report that Angelina has moved into a foster home, where she has her own room with a view into the backyard. And two loving foster parents who are giving her all the attention she deserves.

Spa-Di-Da Day

Dena, who is a Red Door rabbit up for adoption, enjoyed her time at last Saturday's Spa Day. Dena joined 20 visiting rabbits--many Red Door alums!--and one cat who came for some spring spiff-ups and glamour shots.

Next Spa-Di-Da Day is scheduled for July 21.

Still Blue, But Not Sad

Misty Blue has finally arrived at Red Door! We've been trying to arrange transportation for this sweet blue heeler mix from the southern part of the state -- where she faced euthanasia -- for two weeks. Now she's here and while she's still blue, she's not sad at all.

Make Way for Ducklings

On Saturday, we got a call from a young woman. She wanted to bring two young ducks to Red Door. She said she had bought them when they were only a few days old "because they were only $2.00." Now, as they approached 4 weeks of age, she didn't know what to do with them any more. --- Red Door was happy to welcome Cooper, a baby Pekin duck, and Khaki, a baby Campbell Khaki duck. Poor guys -- they'd been living on chicken feed, not duck food, all this time! --- We're happy to report Cooper and Khaki are safe at their new home, where they join a number of family pets, including a mature male duck who has turned himself into Mr. Mom for them.

Be a Buddy to a Red Door animal -- check out our new Buddy System!

Bailey just arrived at Red Door. He's being very brave, but, still, it's a shock for him to have been given up by his family. Want to help him out? --- Through Red Door's new Buddy System, you can show your compassion for rescued animals by becoming an online buddy. A donation of $25 helps provide a needy animal with food, shelter, and veterinary care prior to being placed in a new home. Consider giving a Buddy system gift -- it's a great way to celebrate someone's birthday or anniversary. We can customize every Buddy posting with a special message from you. --- Go to www.reddoorshelter.org and look for "Buddy System" on the home page.

Paris Hilton Treats Companion Animals like Accessories

We hated to see it -- but Paris Hilton bought a pet rabbit just before Easter! Then she dragged the poor baby bunny along with her while she went shopping at the Beverly Center. We hate to think what will happen when this poor rabbit goes "out of fashion" for Paris.

Fuzzy Face finds a home!

A shelter favorite, Marla, winner of the 2007 Fuzziest Face at Red Door, has found a new home! After coming to Red Door as a skittish feral cat, Marla made a remarkable turnaround and decided one day that she would try becoming a fuzzy love cat. While many potential adopters loved her personality, many more were turned off by Marla's long, fluffy, coat. Finally Marla found her companion and went to her new home recently. The first of many spring adoptions at Red Door!
